2014 Cadillac ELR - The luxury touring coupe that's electric
The style and design is quite unlike anything we’ve seen from Cadillac prior to this, but it very unmistakably exhibits the brand DNA we’ve grown to love in the past few years. It is decidedly streamlined, but retains the angular looks and tall beltline we’ve seen on other Cadillacs. It definitely has its very own look that sets it apart from other cars on the road.
The ELR is aesthetically almost equivalent to the 2009 Cadillac Converj Concept, holding onto all of its major styling aspects and dimensions. A vestigial chrome grille that is not going to actually let air flow through it is flanked by vertically stacked Led-powered car headlights and Cadillac's signature light tubes. Those front lights extend into the leading fenders and create a character line that sweeps up the body sides, culminating in erect LED tail lamps that also extend into the fenders.
Just like the Volt, Caddy ELR uses a T-shaped, 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, located along the centerline of the vehicle, between the front and rear wheels for ideal weight distribution. They can also be charged via a plug. Total charge duration on a 240-volt outlet is around 4.5 hours, while the 110-volt outlet next to your toaster will get the ELR’s batteries charged up again in around twelve hours.
The ELR is an extended-range EV, meaning it’s good for an all-electric distance of 35 miles (the Volt comes in at 37), before the gasoline generator kicks right into feeding charge to the battery pack and supply the electric motor. Cadillac even worked with the American Federation of the Blind to supply the ELR with a driver-activated tone which alerts pedestrians at intersections.
This is possibly the nicest, most upscale interior Cadillac has crafted in decades. Premium materials cover everything from the instrument panel to the center console. The doors are wrapped in high-quality leather, wood, carbon fiber or metal. The elective Opus semi-aniline leather car seats feel more satisfying than most high-ticket leather furniture.
ELR’s confident and responsive EREV driving technology is improved with exclusive Regen on Demand and selectable drive modes that elevate driving and make the most of efficiency. Regen on Demand empowers the driver to temporarily regenerate energy from the ELR’s momentum into electricity that can be placed in the battery pack for later use. It is engaged via steering-wheel paddles adapted from traditional performance racing cars.
